Introduction to Handguns & Firearms Safety (March 28, 2026)

This course is designed to provide a hands-on experience in firearms safety for people who are new gun owners or are thinking of purchasing a firearm for personal safety and/or recreational shooting.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to

  • Demonstrate safe handgun handling skills

  • Describe the different types of pistols, their parts and operation

  • Identify types and calibers of ammunition

  • Be able to load and unload a firearm using “dummy” ammunition

  • Demonstrate effective firing stance, grip and use of handgun sights

  • Recite the four rules of gun safety

  • Explain where to find range safety information

  • Describe the role of the Range Safety Officers

  • Participate in target shooting with various semi-automatic pistols and revolvers

  • Recall the basics of Minnesota carry permit and self-defense law

  • Describe the expectations for purchasing and carrying a handgun

  • Identify common gun cleaning supplies

This course is open to people over the age of 18. Because of some adult content, teens, ages 13 - 17 years, may attend with a parent or guardian who is also a participant.

Handguns, ammunition, targets and personal safety gear are provided. If you already own a handgun, you are welcome to bring it with you.

This beginner‑friendly course gives new or prospective gun owners practical experience with handgun safety, covering how pistols work, how to handle them responsibly, how to load and unload using dummy rounds, and how to use proper stance, grip, and sights. Participants learn the four rules of gun safety, how to find and follow range guidelines, what Range Safety Officers do, and the basics of Minnesota carry and self‑defense laws. The class also includes guidance on buying and carrying a handgun, and an introduction to common cleaning supplies.
